Friedman Veterinary Service has put together a flexible and comprehensive healthcare program for pleasure, breeding, and performance horses.  This preventative health care plan provides physical exams, vaccinations, dewormings, dental care, and nutritional counseling.  The program is tailored to fit the needs of your horse- taking into account its uses, stabling and associated health risks.  In addition to optimum preventative healthcare, surgical colic reimbursement makes EQUICARE exceptionally valuable.  This benefit provides up to $5000.00 of surgical colic reimbursement (by Pfizer Animal Health, makers of Strongid C) including 3 days hospitalization with the hospital and surgeon of your choice.  Upon enrollment Friedman Veterinary Service will keep your horse’s records and remind you when your horse is due for any procedure.  This will provide you with a worry free health maintenance program as well as providing an opportunity to project your horse's health maintenance costs.  The following are descriptions of the Basic plan as well as recommendations for performance, horses.  We are very enthusiastic about this program because not only does it provide an excellent preventative healthcare program but also surgical colic protection at an exceptional price.
The Basic Plan provides the following services for each horse:

First Visit

Second Visit

  • Physical exam: basic or extensive  (see definition below)
  • Annual Encephalitis, West Nile & Tetanus vaccines
  • Ivermectin Deworming
    Dental exam, float if necessary
  • 50lb. Strongid C 2X (enough for the year)

  • Physical exam: basic (see definition below)
  • Ivermectin Deworm
  • Dental exam, float (if not done on 1st visit)

The cost for this plan in addition to Basic Plan fee is: $78.00 for extensive exam plus the cost of each additional vaccine.

Basic physical exam is comprised of stethoscope exam of heart and lungs, dermatological examination (skin and coat), taking temperature pulse and respiration rates, examination of lymph nodes, and visual inspection of the entire horse.
Extensive physical exam is comprised of the basic exam plus, ophthalmic exam, physical palpation & musculoskeletal exam of the neck, back, and legs, evaluation of leg neck and back flexibility and range of motion, objective detailed measurement of the feet, acupuncture exam and chiropractic exam.
Please Note:
Charges for farm calls, sedatives, other vaccinations, drugs, or any other veterinary products or services not listed in the Basic Plan are not included and are available at additional cost.

Surgical Colic Reimbursement (Pfizer Animal Health Preventicare™ program):
In addition to the benefits listed above, under a special agreement with Pfizer Animal Health, if your horse colics while enrolled in our Basic or Performance Plan and Pfizer’s Preventicare™ program and surgery is required, Pfizer Animal Health will reimburse the cost of surgery and up to three days of after care up to $5000.  This service is provided at no additional charge when you enroll in, and comply with the terms of this plan and does not include colics treated non-surgically.  If your horse is currently covered by surgical insurance, reimbursement is only for deductible & other costs not covered by insurance up to $5000.00.  Ask us for more details on how your horse can qualify.

There are three disqualifications for Pfizer Animal Health’s Preventicare™ surgical colic reimbursement:

  1. Any horse that has had previous colic surgery.
  2. Any horse that has experienced colic in the last 12 months or has a history of chronic colic.
  3. Any horse less than five months of age and not fully weaned from its mother, or any horse over 20 years of age.

Colic Facts: In research studies conducted on colic in the past few years, the following are some of the conclusions:

  • Breeding horses had nearly twice the risk of colic as opposed to pleasure horses.
  • Arabians were twice as likely to colic as compared to other breeds.
  • Horses cared for by a trainer or farm/stable manager had a significantly higher colic risk as compared to horses cared for by their owners.
  • Horses having adequate pasture access had a lower incidence of colic as compared to those with no pasture access.
  • Foals, weanlings and yearlings had a lower risk for colic than horses of other ages.
Horses from 2-10 years of age had a greater risk for colic than horses over the age of 10.
  • Horses used for events and in race training had a significantly higher risk for colic than horses of other uses.
  • Horses stalled for more than 12 hours per day had a significantly higher risk for colic as opposed to those used for lessons and those on pasture 24 hours per day.
  • Horses that consumed diets composed of non-roughage, concentrated feeds such as whole grain corn increased their risk for colic by 70%.
