1. Observe surgery site for bleeding. If site bleeds excessively (more drops than you can count) call me.
  2. Starting the day after surgery, walk the horse 20 minutes twice daily. Turnout is not sufficient as many horses will not walk long enough. Keep the horse quiet for 2 days, no running etc.
  3. Hose over the surface of the swollen sheath area with cool water 10-20 minutes twice daily. Do not hose into the wound.
  4. Look for signs of infection. A normal discharge is yellowish red but clear. If discharge is cloudy, white, or otherwise looks like pus, call me.
  5. The incision should drain for at least 5-7 days. If the drainage stops earlier and the swelling increases, call me.
