Wrapping the horse’s leg can accelerate healing time and reduce swelling.     Improperly applied leg wraps can injure the horse or be inefficient at best.

  1. Apply all layers of the wrap in the same direction.

  2. When wrapping the leg, a good rule of thumb is to wrap from one joint all the way to the next (covering the area in need of the wrap).

  3. Unroll the wrap so that:

  4. The wrap goes toward the outside over the front of the leg

    And

The wrap goes toward the inside over the back of the leg

  5. We prefer 6 inch wide gauze (4 inch is ok). Each layer should cover the previous layer by approximately ¸ the wrap’s width.

  6. The first layer should be white gauze (Kling). Apply only tight enough to lay down the gauze. Do not apply tension.

  7. The second layer should be at least 2 layers of sheet cotton, more if additional padding is needed.

  8. The third layer secures the sheet cotton. Use brown (or white) gauze with snug tension. Do not apply tightly, yet apply with firm even tension.

  9. The last layer is elastic tape. Use moderate even tension. When finished you should be able to place 1 finger between wrap and leg. We mostly use Vetwrap¨ or another similar product. Other times, polo bandages or Elasticon¨ is used. The type of material is chosen for the specific intended purpose.
